What is the ‘LLM’? The Master of Laws (LLM) is an advanced law degree at the graduate or masters level of study. It’s intended to provide a person who has an undergraduate degree with an opportunity to pursue the in-depth study of law in a specific area of law or specialized field. In the U.K. persons with undergraduate degrees with specializations that are law-related or heavily regulated, such as political science, criminology and finance, often add value to their specialization by obtaining their LLM in the comparable legal field and embarking on a “dual disciplinary’ career. Government policy advisor, court services and justice system administration and merchant banking are examples of the leveraging of political science, criminology and finance with an LLM into dual disciplinary careers. The U.K. LLM Advantage There are 2 routes open to Canadian students who aspire to attain ‘legal expert’/consultant status. 1. Canadians with undergraduate degrees can enrol in a two year senior status LLB degree in a U.K. law school and upon completion enrol in a 1 year graduate LLM. They obtain both an LLB and LLM degree in three years instead of the four years it takes to qualify for the dual designations through the Canadian law school route. 2. Canadians with undergraduate degrees who don’t want to engage in the general practice of law but want to obtain ‘legal expert’/consultant status to work in government, international relations, consulting, merchant banking or advocacy with an NGO can enrol in a 1 year gradate LLM program. Canadian law schools require applicants to the LLM program to have an LLB/JD degree! 
What is the professional status of a holder of an LLM Degree? The LLM degree holder has core competencies to qualify as a “legal expert”/consultant in a legal field or field with a legal component. The level of expertise associated with their LLM credential extends well beyond the scope of an LL.B degree program. Legal experts/consultants work as legal professionals: In legal departments in organizations (banks, regulated industries and the health care field), As advocates and lobbyists in non-governmental organizations (NGOs); think global warming, refugee and international aid organizations, and consultants. LLM and MA Law legal experts do not practice law. As policy advisors and public administrators in governments and regulatory agencies. As consultants with management consulting firms. How Does a U.K. Law School LLM Rate in Canada? The great law schools of the world are located in the U.K. These law schools are internationally renowned for the superb quality of their graduate level LLM. On average, 35% - 40%  of the teaching faculty has obtained their graduate studies legal expert status to qualify as law professors from U.K. law schools. You will be attending the law schools of choice of Canadian law school professors and obtaining the same LLM as those who teach Canadian law students in Canadian law schools. These law professors have gravitated beyond the general practice of law and chosen to become ‘legal experts’/consultants in a rewarding career niche in the legal profession. Student Comments on U.K. LLM Programs “John, Queen Mary, University of London's MA in Migration and Law, is a revolutionary program being offered.  While other universities do offer Masters Programs pertaining to Migration, very few offer the combined Law option. This allows students to take classes relating to the legal aspects of migration world over as well as socially and politically based courses. While many module options are available to students, I have taken classes on Comparative Immigration, Theories and Typologies of Migration and will be taking a class on Housing, Education and Healthcare for new migrants.  These classes are quite relevant to Canadian students as the issues dealt with them are found in most metropolitan areas.
