Law at the University of Dundee

You are invited to a special online event with the University of Dundee!

We are hosting a WebinarJam session with the university so that you can learn more about what they have to offer. You’ll have an opportunity to get insight into being a law student at the university, along with a preview of what it’s like to live in Dundee.

The session will be led by Professor Peter McEleavy. He will be conducting an International Litigation Simulation, which is a very exciting opportunity!

When two parties are in dispute (eg over a contract / responsibility for an accident) and cannot reach an agreed solution, they might bring legal proceedings to have a local judge adjudicate on the issue. When there is an international dimension(s) to the dispute the resolution becomes much more complicated: where should proceedings be brought? What law should determine liability? What status should be accorded to a foreign judgment? Professor McEleavy will explore and explain these issues through a simulated case.

Professor McEleavy is an English trained barrister (Gray’s Inn 1999). Peter is a specialist in international family law.

HIs research has been relied upon by leading courts globally, and in recent years has regularly been cited in proceedings of the Court of Justice of the European Union.  Peter has regularly been called upon to advise on contentious aspects of law reform: the Europeanisation of child abduction rules (Lord Chancellor's Department, 2002); the implementation of the 1996 Hague Convention on the Protection of Children (Ministry of Justice, 2009/10, 2012); and the introduction of same-sex marriage (States of Guernsey, 2015).  From 2009 – 2016 he was a member of the team of editors of the leading private international law text: Dicey, Morris & Collins on the Conflict of Laws.

Peter took up his chair in international family law at the University of Dundee in February 2006. Before joining Dundee Law School he had been at the University of Aberdeen for 5 years, first as a lecturer and then senior lecturer, and had previously lectured at the London School of Economics for 3 years and the University of Angers, in France.

Please join us for this session to have the opportunity to meet Professor McEleavy and to ask your questions.

We look forward to welcoming you to the event!
